Movies : Adrift

Seems like Netflix is the new Cinema now. If the movie’s not Avengers or Star Wars, it means it’s either a download or a Netflix movie.

Adrift starred the girl from the Divergent trilogy and the guy from The Hunger Games trilogy. Or however many “logy” they categorize themselves in, who cares. Both aren’t my favourite (type of) actors, i just happened to randomly watch this movie because it was recommended in Netflix for me.

And I guess the reason is because of my obsession towards survival movies (and games). So I tried it, casually watched it at first and after a few minutes in, it got interesting.

The movie was based on a true story of Tami (played by Shailene Woodley), a young adventurer who fell in love with Richard (Sam Claflin) a sailor who took her sailing the Pacific Ocean towards her home state, California. (You can read the whole plot in Wikipedia, of course). Unfortunately, they went through a storm that threw Richard off the boat and after scenes of Tami struggling to stay alive with him supposedly injured, it was revealed that him being alive was just a hallucination and he was dead at sea, leaving her to survive alone. Tragic.

What I loved about the movie is how they arrange the storyline to interchange between past and present and played with your emotions the whole journey. Shailene did a great job, potraying a super-strong woman who fought to survive against all odds, despite being broken hearted by the death of her true love. Love her in this one, and I’m even a fan of any of her other movies. Kudos. Overall, the  movie can be said to be a modern-ish version of the Titanic, mixed with a little bit of Life of Pi.

8/10 for me. Good job, movie writers.
